As I mentioned, celebrating the book, meaning feeling a sense of accomplishment, might be the most important step in the whole process. Most importantly, we want the kids to feel accomplished, but I hope that all the adults who made this project possible feel that sense of accomplishment, too.
As for me, I particularly enjoy watching the message we have created spread. And, the parting words of Neal Murata, the Cultural Attaché, really sunk deep. He said, “Remember, once a Cultural Ambassador, always a Cultural Ambassador.” I’ve taken that to heart.

Once long ago while traveling through Argentina on bicycles, my friend, Dennis, and I got stuck in the mud of the Chaco. We couldn’t move and were running low on food and water. Fortunately, on our second day, an Argentine family rescued us and took us to their home. We lived with them for five days and everyone in the community welcomed us. Dennis and I worried about how to repay their kindness, so we thanked the family profusely and awkwardly, but the father, grinning as usual, said, “No, thank you for showing my village and my children that the impossible is possible.” For me, it was one of the first times I began to see that happiness was right in front of my eyes. So, for Dennis and myself, this book has special meaning: it is a way of “paying forward” the kindness and wisdom of that one family, and the opportunity to sow the seeds of dreams amongst everyone who may read this book.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to be invited by the US Embassy and the schools of Argentina to collaborate on this special edition. I hope everyone realizes that whether or not your illustration was chosen that you have influenced the book with your passion and ideas, and that includes the community supporting the children. For example, it is interesting to see how each class subconsciously created a theme, like the Fundación COR orphanage that produced dozens of drawings of hearts and heart-shaped people representing the people they loved. It reminded me that kids are kids everywhere in the world, and it’s an example of falling up the hills of life.
There are literally thousands of people directly involved in the creation of this book, but I do owe my deepest gratitude for this edition to Shannon Farrell. Her passion and her personal magic for making things happen is what brought this project to life. There are many more dedicated people behind the scenes that are equally important: Laura Santamarina’s organizational ability, fueled by her passion for children, helped keep everyone in the right place at the right time; Jorge Gomez had an uncanny knack for sneaking up on me with a video camera to document the making of the book for posterity; Neal Murata for his unconditional inspiration; Cynthia Smith for her efforts with final edits to the Spanish translation, and Jake Elsen for helping obtain much-needed permissions for publication of the book’s illustrations; and thanks to everyone on the following pages who helped create the space for this book. In general, I was impressed with all the wonderful projects the embassy is sponsoring to promote cultural diversity, education and goodwill, and it makes me proud to be a Cultural Ambassador.
I also need to recognize everyone at Poplar Creek Elementary (pictured on the back cover) who created the English edition of Falling Uphill, including: Principal Jane Gennerman, Associate Principal Larry Lueck, art teacher Terry Berg, and especially Student Resource Teacher Kate Krzysik for having the vision to see the potential of this project. Hace mucho tiempo mientras recorría Argentina en bicicleta, nos quedamos varados en el barro con mi amigo Dennis en la provincia del Chaco. No nos podíamos mover y nos estábamos quedando sin agua y comida. Por suerte, al segundo día, una familia argentina nos rescató y nos llevó a su casa. Vivimos con la familia durante cinco días y éramos bienvenidos por todos los miembros de la comunidad. Dennis y yo pensábamos en cómo retribuirles su amabilidad así que les agradecimos mucho de corazón como pudimos y el padre con la mueca de siempre nos dijo: “Por nada, gracias por mostrarle a mi pueblo y a mis hijos que es posible lograr lo imposible”. Para mí era una de las primeras imágenes que empezaban a mostrarme que la felicidad estaba delante de mis ojos. Por eso para Dennis y para mí, este libro tiene un significado especial: es una manera de retribuir la amabilidad y sabiduría de esa familia y la oportunidad de sembrar las semillas de los sueños en todas las personas que lean este libro.
Ha sido un gran honor en mi vida haber sido invitado por la Embajada de Estados Unidos y las escuelas de Argentina para colaborar en esta edición especial. Espero que todos comprendan que independientemente de que su dibujo haya sido incluido o no en el libro, todos y cada uno de los alumnos han aportado al libro su pasión e ideas y esto abarca a la comunidad que brindó su apoyo a los niños. Por ejemplo, es interesante ver cómo cada clase en forma inconsciente generaba un tema como sucedió en la Fundación COR, que hizo decenas de dibujos de corazones y gente con forma de corazón representando a las personas que aman. Esto me recordó que los niños son niños en todas partes del mundo y es un ejemplo de lo que significa caer hacia arriba por las montañas de la vida.
Existen cientos de personas que participaron en la creación de este libro. Quiero expresar mi más profundo agradecimiento por hacer posible esta edición a Shannon Farrell. Su pasión y su magia personal para hacer que las cosas sucedan hicieron posible este proyecto.
